On February 18, the United States and Russia held a high-level representative meeting in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, and the two sides reached four points of consensus – what is surprising is not that the three-year Russia-Ukraine conflict is taking a dramatic turn, but that in this meeting, Europe and Ukraine, the party concerned, were not invited.
For a long time, many people have believed that Trump is fascinated by – and even admires – President Putin. We are not sure where this admiration comes from, which may be a psychological issue, but perhaps we can guess that President Putin’s image as a political strongman with absolute power is a projection of Trump’s inner self and what he himself desires.
In the eyes of traditional politicians, Trump is worthless. He lacks wisdom, kindness, and tolerance, and is a businessman who observes national interests as marginal benefits for the company. Even he doesn’t have a sense of humor – only rely on some vulgar mockery to win laughter.
We cannot predict whether the United States and Russia will privately commit to lifelong love during their romantic relationship, but if they do reach some mutually agreed upon agreement, it means that the United States has certainly made concessions on some fundamental issues, and such concessions will definitely harm the democratic values that the United States has always believed in.
Ironically, less than a month ago, Vice President J. D. Vance at the Munich Security Conference, arrogantly criticized the democratic situation in Europe and expressed concern about the deterioration of democracy. His speech was confusing. Why didn’t an important conference on security discuss the war between Ukraine and Russia? The answer is now obvious: to avoid provoking Russia.
After all, just two days ago, the United Nations witnessed a rare scene: both the United States and Russia voted against the draft resolution of advancing a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
We cannot predict how long the honeymoon period between the United States and Russia will last, nor can we judge whether Russia will ultimately agree on a ceasefire agreement, and whether the relationship between the United States and Russia will improve as some say: to confront China?
The war between Ukraine and Russia has continued so far, with countless deaths and injuries. The worst result may be that the territory belongs to Russia, minerals belong to the United States, debt belongs to Europe, and glory belongs to Ukraine.
What a sad ending.
